My still life included my running shoes, a clock, a pencil and a bottle of white out. The shoes represent me because I'm on the cross country team and the track & field team so I am usually running everyday after school and on sometimes on the weekends. Running also helped to meet new people and it is the reason that I have most of the friends that I have now. The clock represents how time is the soul controller of my life. Everything is on a schedule and I probably check the time at least 50 times a day. The pencil represents my need to write things down and be able to erase them. I can't just remember things, I have to write them down. Also, there are so many different values you can make with just a single pencil, I love the variety and how smooth the lead goes onto the paper. My last item, the white out, represents how indecisive I am. I may decide on one thing but then 10 minutes later I will probably have changed my mind at least 5 times. White out is good for creating a blank slate and starting over. The medium I picked was acrylic paint because there are so many little details that I'm not sure I would have been able to get with water colors. Some experienced artists could probably get the finer details in water color, but since I'm a beginner, I am not confident in my painting ability yet. I think that the clock and white out turned out the most successful in my piece. They both had fine details that I liked painted and I also think that the colors turned out pretty nice. If I could have a do-over, I would change the background colors. They didn't really compliment the piece and from my perspective they just ruined the whole thing.

My mentor's name is Rachel and she's been taking art classes since she was in 4th grade. Her Weebly can be found at rachelal2017.weebly.com. Rachel has taken drawing and art 1-4 at Apex High and thinks that drawing was the most beneficial in her art skills. Out of the mentor/mentee program, I'm hoping to gain some inside knowledge to what the best art classes are to take and get some good tips to improve my art skills.
The pencil observational drawing was the hardest for me. It took me multiple days and I didn't get to completely finish but it was a good thing to start out the semester on. Everyday the lighting was slightly different, so that made it hard to shade the value in correctly. I liked drawing with pencil because I messed up many times and being able to erase was very helpful. The pen observational drawing was difficult to start but once I had the outline done it was fun to draw. I didn't like that I could not erase my mistakes but it was a good challenge. I used stippling for the shadows and that took way longer than I had anticipated but I was pleased with the results.
The colored pencil circle was the warm up that I learned the most from. I had never really experimented with layering colors much before. This warm up gave me a whole new perspective of colored pencils. Some weird brown smudge got on my sphere and I'm not sure what it's from but I'm happy with the rest of it. Javier Pérez is an artist from Guayaquil, Ecuador who creates art using simple everyday things and his imagination. His claim to fame came from posting his unique art on his Instagram page, where he was soon discovered by people around the world. Unfortunately, being from South America, all of his biographies and interviews are not in English, so I could not find very much of his personal information. To create his art, Pérez uses little knickknacks or simple items that one might encounter in everyday life. He attended many art festivities hoping to make it as a big artist when he was younger, but after years of not being a "good enough artist", he realized that he had been going about this all wrong. He didn't have to be some big fancy artist that created these elaborate drawings and paintings in order to make art that was loved by the world, he realized that he saw more beauty in the simple rather than the complex. He learned to see art wherever he went. This is why he inspires me so much, there's nothing to his art, yet there is so much. I want to be able to see what he sees when he walks down the street. I want to be able to see more in less. The simplicity of his art draws me in and makes me smile, and that's what I want out of life, to make people smile.
